Why Donors Aren't Giving

46% of United States nonprofits said in 2025 that acquiring and retaining donors is among their biggest challenges (Statista, 2026).
If your nonprofit has a great mission, awesome programming, and is making meaningful impact, why aren’t donors giving?
Often, the problem isn’t your mission. It’s not your programming either. The issue is likely due to misalignment of messaging.
If the executive director, board chair, volunteers, and program participants all talk about your mission differently, that means no one is clear on what your nonprofit delivers.
Yikes.
And if the people CLOSEST to your organization cannot explain what you do and why it matters, then potential donors certainly won’t understand why they should give.
If left unresolved, message misalignment will cause a snowball effect in your organization – one that will take you further from your mission. Solutions will be suggested (new logo, update the website, create a new social media profile), but none of these “solutions” will fix anything. You’re simply attending to the symptoms, rather than the root of the issue.
The good news? You can fix message misalignment.
The first step is to review your mission, vision, and values. From there, you can begin identifying any misunderstandings among internal stakeholders.
