Nonprofits, STOP posting graphics on social media...Â
Here’s the scenario: It’s June. Summer programming is about to begin. In a final push to increase registrants, you create a graphic with trendy font, abstract shapes, and fun colors. Then, you post the flyer to Instagram and Facebook.Â
While graphics certainly have their place, the truth is that treating your social media profiles like bulletin boards will deter potential donors and volunteers. It won't attract them.Â
Every organization is competing for views on social media. You only have a few seconds to stop someone from scrolling on their phone. A text-heavy graphic is not going to capture someone’s attention, and if it does, they likely will only read the largest text before moving on.Â
So how do you market events and tell people about your services? Start with photos. Appoint someone on staff or a trusted volunteer to take a couple pictures on their smartphone during events and when programming is running. If your nonprofit provides services that cannot be photographed, use staff and volunteers as spokespersons. You can do volunteer highlights or even short videos where staff talk about why they enjoy their work.Â
Remember, it’s always best to SHOW who you are than to tell. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.Â
